The Rainbow Connection Meaning

The Rainbow Connection

Why are there so many songs about rainbows
And what’s on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
And rainbows have nothing to hide.
So we’ve been told and some choose to believe it
I know they’re wrong, wait and see.
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

Who said that every wish would be heard and answered
when wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that
and someone believed it,
and look what it’s done so far.
What’s so amazing that keeps us stargazing?
And what do we think we might see?
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection,
the lovers, the dreamers and me.

All of us under its spell,
we know that it’s probably magic….

Have you been half asleep
and have you heard voices?
I’ve heard them calling my name.
Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors?
The voice might be one and the same.
I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it.
It’s something that I’m supposed to be.
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection,
the lovers, the dreamers and me.
La, da da, La, da da do, La Laa, la la, La, La la doooooo

What does it mean to you?

On MySpace I posted the above. Mainly because it confused me, and everyone else that wrote about this song seemed even more confused as to the real meaning of it. This bothered me. Everyone knew that this was about hope and that it had a positive message, but no one could decipher what the message was exactly. Many people in turn asked me what it meant to me.

Now, I have to apologize because I am a very precise person, and like to analyze things in depth to find the real meaning. If sometimes you like songs better before you find out what they really mean, then you are the type of person that should maybe not read on.

I don’t know if what I found is what the writer meant exactly. To me it doesn’t matter. What matters is what the song actually says and means. Whether or not its message was his conscious decision, or just how the spirit unconsciously moved him, is another topic about personal artistic merit.

I have broken it up verse by verse to make it easier to see its message. The whole is a sum of its parts.

Why are there so many songs about rainbows
and what’s on the other side?

Right away, it’s asking why are there so many stories about the unknown, about the things that are on the other side.

This song is a metaphor, and not about Rainbows, unless you think of humans and life itself as a rainbow. It is about us, our connections, our purpose, questions of why we are here, and what comes next, on the “other side”.

Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
and rainbows have nothing to hide.

This represents the purely logical view of what the mysteries of life are. Life is beautiful, but just an Illusion nothing more. Many scientific or philosopher type people feel this way.

So we’ve been told and some choose to believe it
I know they’re wrong, wait and see.

You cannot just bottle up life in a math formula. Although this is a good method of thinking to find cures and solutions to problems, it does not always help in the everyday mysteries of life, and will not help us after we are gone.

“If you can Choose to believe it, it is probably wrong.”

These lines are about how Science and other schools of thought have failed us emotionally.

Who said that every wish would be heard and answered
when wished on the morning star?

Wishes in this part are our Prayers that may or may not be answered. When he asked, “Who said” he is suggesting that all superstitions, wishes, and prayers are man made rules, and is complaining that the prayers are not answered. If they had been answered, you would automatically know the source, the “Who” would be obvious. Because this is a question, we can assume the prayers did not get through.

It is also interesting that he uses the term “Morning Star”. This short sentence encompasses many religions in two words. Along with many other Solar Deities and other light bearing gods in mythology, Jesus and Lucifer were both specifically called the “Morning Star” (Isa 14:12-15 and Rev 22:16)

Somebody thought of that,

and someone believed it,
<!–[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]–>
<!–[endif]–>

Again, religions are man made beliefs, not divine. Created by people to help, guide, or control other people.

and look what it’s done so far.

This is another genius line, mainly because it can be looked at in different ways. It can voice the negative things religion has done; the discord, wars, heartache, etc. Alternatively, it can illustrate the good things religion has brought us; healing, comfort, and structure.

However, because this song is a song about searching, I don’t think that he found life’s meaning in any one religion. This section is about unanswered prayers, the vagueness of this line lends itself to nothing, meaning that what it is saying is that all the praying and all the wishing may make you feel good, but it has done nothing to help this search for meaning.

These lines are about how man made religions and other superstitions have failed us intellectually.

What’s so amazing that keeps us stargazing?
And what do we think we might see?

We keep looking up for something, we do not know what.

All of us under its spell,
we know that it’s probably magic….

What we find might not even be real. Magic is the unknown.

Have you been half asleep
and have you heard voices?

Notice this is the first time he talks directly to the listener.

I’ve heard them calling my name.
Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors?

The voice might be one and the same.

After separating both science-head people and religious- heart people, He is now talking about himself, the universal self, and all individual people that are called to seek as sailors are called to the open sea. He wonders if maybe the thing calling him is the same thing calling all of us.

I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it.
It’s something that I’m supposed to be.

Everybody, deep down, has a calling, a real feeling that something or some purpose is there inside of us, “Something that I’m supposed to be”.

All of this is uncertain, he is half-asleep, not %100 sure about what he has heard, it is still a mystery. Maybe we do not even have words for it yet, surely not able to be explained by either science or religion. However, we know there is something.

This part is saying; we all feel something, and is the unknown calling in you the same unknown calling in me?

Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection,
the lovers, the dreamers and me.

We are all searching, this song separate all of humanity into three categories; the lovers, the dreamers, and me. Notice he is separating self from Lovers and Dreamers. A closer look at them is revealing. First, a “Lover” is someone who is all heart; you don’t love with your head. In contrast, a “Dreamer” is all head you don’t dream in your heart. This may be confusing because some people might argue that they do have dreams in their heart. But all dreams are not good, some dreams are nightmares. I would argue that we have love for some of our dreams and it is that love that is in or hearts, for the dream that is in our mind.

So first, he talks about the Intellectual Scientist being wrong and failing us emotionally. In the second section, he talks about the Emotional Religious being wrong and failing us intellectually. In the third section, he is speaking from personal experience, and he cannot be wrong because he is still saying the magic words “I don’t Know” which are the most beautiful words anyone can say. By saying these words, the potential for growth and learning is there, which brings us hope. Throughout the song there are many questions and many uncertainties, its saying we are all still looking, no one knows…Yet.

What should we do? What does he do? He is not relating to either category so what is he? Some might think that he is suggesting another third unrevealed way of seeking. The truth is that this is his way of saying that the best way is right in the middle- a perfect balance between the two. He does not fail us intellectually or emotionally because he not a part of either group, he is teaching us to be both a lover and a dreamer. This is how and where to look for answers and happiness.

Understand that the balance is what works for the universal self, the “me”, the individual. We need all types in this world; yes, we do need head and heart groups of people. But if there is any chance that “we’ll find it” we need to stay balanced individually.

The way I like to say these things

“If you think you have the truth, you can’t find the truth.”
<!–[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]–>
<!–[endif]–>

“The best thing to know is that you know nothing.”

“If you can Choose to believe it, it is probably wrong.”

“Stop looking “Up” and “Down” for answers. There are no answers in heaven or earth. Look within; all real answers are inside of you.”

“In the end even if we never get the answers it will not matter. The fact that we keep looking is all that matters.”

Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection,
the lovers, the dreamers and me.

“Hope” for the “Truth” being your self in perfect balance.

Or just in a word;

“Hope”

At the end of the Muppet Movie, the song has some different verses that give more clues especially if you substitute life every time he says rainbow

Why are there so many songs about (life)rainbows?

That’s part of what (life is)rainbows do.

Rainbows are(Life is) memories, sweet dream reminders.

What is it you’d like to do?

All of us watching and wishing we’d find it (the meaning).

I know that your watching too. (Relating to listener again)

Someday you’ll find it,

the (meaning of Life)rainbow connection,
the lovers, the dreamers and… … …

He finally says it! He says the word life instead of rainbow at very the end of the movie, he could have said; Rainbows are like movies, But he says…

Life’s like a movie, write your own ending,

Keep believing, Keep Pretending,

We’ve done just what we set out to do.

In summary, while all of humanity looks for the meaning of life, you as an individual can find your own meaning. Your life is what you make it.

Thanks to the Lovers, the Dreamers and you

  1. Thanks! =)

  2. Hello. This song is about God. Jim Henson was a Christian.

Why are there so many songs about rainbows
and what’s on the other side?

After the flood God put the rainbow in the sky as a reminder of the covenant He made with Noah in which He will never destroy humanity again. Every person that has ever lived has sought out God because it was built into to us to do so. Whether or not you believe in Him is up to the individual. The rainbow is God’s covenant with us and what is behind the covenant? God’s love for us.

Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
and rainbows have nothing to hide.

Unbelievers say that people who believe may have had some sought of experience or vision that they attribute to God but they are only illusions and have nothing behind them

So we’ve been told and some choose to believe it.
I know they’re wrong, wait and see.

The secular world argues that God is an illusion but Kermit knows that they are wrong and tells them to wait and see. What is he waiting for the unbelievers to see? The Second Coming of Christ.

Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me

One day, God’s love for us will be revealed and who will find it? The lovers: people who love God. The dreamers: Christians are often accused of living in a dream and not the real world. Me: Kermit as the voice of Jim Henson.

Who said that every wish would be heard
and answered when wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that and someone believed it.
Look what it’s done so far.

Jesus was referred to as the morning star. Many people pray for things and their prayers are not answered. God said that your prayers regarding what you need will be answered, not the ones regarding the things that you want. We live in a world were wants come before needs and where has that gotten us? War, poverty and death.

What’s so amazing that keeps us star gazing
and what do we think we might see?

Man has been star gazing from the moment we first walked the earth. Why? Because God’s glory is revealed in the stars and man is naturally inclined to look for God. Whether you see Him or not is another matter.

Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

All of us under its spell. We know that it’s probably magic.

Most people feel that someone or something is watching over them at some point during their life and we know that it is supernatural. God.

Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices?
I’ve heard them calling my name

God is always calling for you. Most people when only think about themselves and there own circumstances. When you begin to disconnect from this world, and appear to be dreaming or half asleep to people still in this world, you will begin to hear God’s voice.
    .
Is this the sweet sound that called the young sailors.
The voice might be one and the same.

The sweet sound that called the young sailors refers to the Sirens in Homers ‘Odyssey’. These creatures lured sailors to their death through their sweet sounding voices. Satan does the same. You must beware of confusing the voice of Satan with the voice of God.

I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it.
It’s something that I’m supposed to be.

But once you do hear the voice of God you can not ignore it because you know that through listening to It you will become the person that you where supposed to be.

Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

    • Rainbow Connection was not written by Jim Henson even if he was a Christian, it was written by Kenny Ascher and Paul Williams. I believe you are taking this too personally,

      However I did say:
“If sometimes you like songs better before you find out what they really mean, then you are the type of person that should maybe not read on.”

Yet I do enjoy the many different ways that we homo-sapiens as creative animals can artistically interpret the world around us. It is according to this song it is the lover in all of us, and very important to our world. I am sure how you interpret this song means allot to you and you should not change that. But if you would really like me to go through what you think on this topic I will. many points in your argument are a stretch, vague, or just logical mistakes.
Don’t give up keep searching for truth. Don’t assume you have the answer John 8:36

But this might represent God to you, much like seeing Jesus face in a piece of toast, so If you think this was truly written about God you should talk to Kenny Ascher or Paul Willialms the real authors of this song and find out what they think.

    • personal opinion: you’re dead wrong

      • Ok. Ok. . I see where you are coming from marco. Songs have very different meanings for everyone in general. Thanks for your interpretation though its not bad or anything… Although it is completely different from mine, you have to realize song writers don’t always have such motives as your local church-group. And Willie Nelson is not the most “BIBLE” or even conservative-friendly guy.. He has great music that anyone can enjoy, but you have to know that most of his recordings were done when he was blasted out of his mind, what do you think God has to say about that marco? Finding super-natural meanings in natural events, are only illusions.

      • Illusion – The condition of being deceived by a false perception or belief.

  3. This analysis rocked! Well done.

  4. I Really enjoyed this. i could’nt agree with the author more.
Religion puts a cap on the brain, and say’s “no more, thats as far as you can go and think. If god wanted us to understand it, he would have told us all about it.” everything else is magic and hocus pocus devil stuff.” We know darn well what a rainbow is. they occur all over the planet, not just christian nations. I KNEW there was something to this song! i love it. but christians will twist it and try to take credit for it. because they are brainwashed and affraid of the unknown. what happens after you die. we are the ONLY species on the planet that knows we will die. and that freaks some people out. they need to listen to john lennon’s imagine not just for the pretty melody…BUT THE WORDS AND MEANING. there is no debating that one.

  5. This analysis is AMAZING, and I agree with you 100%.

Rainbow Connection is one of my favorite songs and you’ve done a 1st rate job analyzing its meaning. I’ve bookmarked this page to reread your analysis a couple more times.

Cheers and keep up the GREAT work!

  6. Very good job…
The bit about rainbows being an illusion has to do with the physical properties of a rainbow… they appear curved and that they touch down but never do… curvature of the earth. Also the color of the rainbow is kind of an illusion since white light is split into color. I like the bit about life being an illusion that you wrote… this is a very heady well thought out song… it touches a nerve in almost everyone it seems… a search for bliss and the true self… well done… cheers…

  7. Okay for everyone who is blind to what has been going on for tens of years, let me get you up to date. There are wicked people in the music industry and this song is actually the complete opposite of what my friend wrote. I believe in God but the song clearly refers to satan in place of God. Listen, the song starts.

“Why are there so many songs about rainbows and whats on the other side?.”

Well first off, none. there is only one book not song on the planet which references rainbows and the otherside within the same text and context, and thats the bible. He means life and the otherside which is death.
    Next we have the words,

“Rainbows are visions, only illusions rainbows have nothing to hide.”

again he is refering to life being an illusion which holds no mystery therefore life has nothing to hide meaning there is no afterlife with our lord jesus christ. Moving on

“So we’ve been told and some choose to believe it, I know they’ re wrong wait and see.”

Now he is refering to the bible and it’s word and the christian religion telling the world that we should all look forward to an afterlife with jesus should we accept him and some believe it. He also says that he knows we are wrong and that we should wait and see, which seems to imply that he has special hidden knowledge that we or the bible does not have. Next we have

“Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection, the lovers, the dreamers, and me.”

Now, without going into the separation of himself and the lovers/dreamers, he is saying plainly, that oneday we will find the life conection. If you want more on the life conection or the wicked music industry hit me up by email nightsaintx@gmail.com. next up are the words.

“Who said that every wish would be heard and answered, when wished on the morning star? someone thought of that, and someone believe it, and look what it’s done so far”

First out of the bible, psalms, How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! … cast out of God’s presence for WISHING to be as God. So, here we have the morning star cast from heaven for a wish, but in the song it refers to people who have prayed to satan to gain power and glory and riches, in exchange for their souls(hit me up for more on that), and how it worked and so people believe that praying to satan (the morning star) was all they had wished, lol, and has passed it on for all to use because of what it has accomplished. moving forward.

“What’s so amazing that keeps us star gazing, what do we think we might see?”

Well, here he is asking what we in general look to the skies to see? the answer to that is simple. We look to the skies for other signs of life, that’s what people in general have stated since ancient civilizations started recording these things in there works of art and stories and text. the alien/demonic deception wich is coming has a part in this
(for more on that hi tme up), onward.

“Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection, the lovers, the dreamers, and me”

Here he’s saying that someday we will find that amazing reason we star-gaze which is the life/rainbow connection aka the alien/demonic deception which I can go into more detail about later.

” all of us under it’s spell, you know that it’s probably magic.”

here he’s talking about satans tools which are magic and how we are under it’s spell.

Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices, I’ve heard them calling my name, and is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors the voice might be one and the same, I’ve heard it too many times to ingore it, is it something that Im supposed to be, someday we’ll find it the rainbow connection, the lovers, the dreamers, and me

now he is asking us as the listeners, have we heard voices calling our names as we are half asleep, he even says that he hears them too. He also implies that thisvoice and the voice of the sirens is one and the same. These are the voices that you will hear if you are under satans spell as this other passage also states, So great a deceiver is Satan, that anyone who gave ear to such siren songs was almost surely doomed to fail and suffer irrevocable loss. then he says that the voice has a big influence which he can not ignore, it’s telling him what he is supposed to be. this is common in demonic/alien doctrine to make you into what you really are but also more on that as you inquire. finally he reassure us all that we will find out what we are supposed to be. and there you have it with historical proof and factual evidence to back these claims. If you would like the big picture than lets get to it, hit me up.

  8. Garrett, you are a transcendentalist at heart. Perhaps it’s the fact that hope springs eternal that joins us all. The reminder here is that we must hope independently to appreciate our unity with others. That’s our common bond.

  9. This, this is beautiful..

  10. Dear Mr. Thomas,
    Today you are my hero.
    Thank you.
    Robin
